Access levels
Who can get into your course, tutor and class, and which levels can go together.
An access level decides who can get into something you build. Your course, your AI tutor (an assistant) and your class (a cohort) each have one. This page is the only place the rules are written down.
The three levels
The create screens call the middle level Registration Code. The edit screens and badges call the same level Restricted.
| Level | Who can get in | A course at this level can hold assistants that are… | A cohort at this level can hold courses and assistants that are… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private | Only people whose email you add yourself. There is no code | Private | Private, Registration Code or Public |
| Registration Code | People who type your registration code, and people you invite by email | Private or Registration Code | Registration Code or Public |
| Public | Anyone | Private, Registration Code or Public | Public only |
How students get in
A cohort decides how students arrive. See add students for the steps.
- Private class: add each student's email yourself under Members. You cannot share a code.
- Registration Code class: send the code, or add emails. Find the code on the cohort's Overview.
- Public class: add emails. The screens show no code.
Check the level of your own items on the Courses tab and the Cohorts tab.
The rule of thumb
The two directions run opposite ways. Keep them apart.
- A course holds tutors that are as closed as it is, or more closed. A Private course cannot hold a Public tutor.
- A cohort holds courses and tutors that are as open as it is, or more open. A Registration Code cohort cannot hold a Private course.
SLAN blocks a change that breaks a rule and names the item in the way. Example: your Finance-101 course and its tutor are both Registration Code, and your Spring-2026 class is too. All three fit.
Good to know
- New classes start on Registration Code. If your course is Private, Create Cohort will not let you continue. Change the course to Registration Code first.
- A Public class shows no join code. The class screens show a code only for Registration Code classes. Fill a Public class by adding students' emails. See add students.
- Widgets have no access level. A widget has no level of its own. It shows one tutor.
- Guest mode needs a Public tutor. Guest mode lets visitors chat without signing in. It also needs a plan that includes it. If you make a Public tutor less open, SLAN turns guest mode off on its widgets.
Recommended setup for a class
- Set your course to Registration Code.
- Set your tutor to Registration Code.
- Create your class on Registration Code, then share its code.
