Getting started as a student
Eight steps from a registration code to your first real conversation with your AI Guide. Each step shows the screen you will see.
Sign up with your registration code
Go to slan.co/signup. Fill in your name, the email your professor has for you, and a password of at least 8 characters.
Your professor gives you the registration code in class, on the course page, or in your invitation email. Whether you need it depends on your email:
- Already invited by email. Your cohort appears as a teal chip and the code is optional.
- Not invited yet. The field reads Registration Code * and you cannot continue without it.
If the code is wrong you will see “Invalid Registration Code”. Check it with your professor rather than guessing. Then press Create account.

Wait for the verification code
The card turns into Verify your email and a code lands in your inbox. It can take up to a minute. Don't refresh, and don't sign up a second time.
- Nothing after a minute? Check junk and spam.
- Still nothing? Press Resend code.
Enter the code and press Verify email. You land on sign in.
If you get stuck, go to slan.co/confirm-email, enter your email, and we send a fresh code.
Verify your email
Do this before you sign in or reset your password
We sent a verification code to your email. Enter it below before you continue.
Can't find it? Check your junk or spam folder.
Enable memories (optional)
On your first visit SLAN asks whether it can remember things between chats. Memory stays off until you turn it on.
- Enable memories. It remembers your projects, preferences and progress, so you skip re-explaining your assignment every session.
- Not now. Everything still works. Each chat starts fresh.
Change your mind whenever: open the avatar at the bottom-left of the sidebar → Profile → Personalisation, where you can also view, edit or delete what it remembers.

Start a new chat and pick your assistant
Open slan.co/chat and press New chat in the left sidebar. Then choose who you're talking to from the assistant selector at the bottom-left of the message box.
- Your cohort's assistants are listed there. Each one draws on a specific course's materials.
- Choose with care: the assistant decides which course frameworks guide the conversation.
- Every chat is saved in the sidebar, grouped by date. Rename one to find it later.
Your profile menu is the avatar at the very bottom-left.

Give feedback, or report a bug
Every answer has a small row of buttons under it. Hover or tap the message to see them.
- Thumbs up. This answer helped. One tap and you are done.
- Flag. Something was wrong. Pick the reasons (Inaccurate, Harmful, Not helpful, Confusing, Needs review) and add a comment.
- Copy. Take the answer into your own notes.
Something broken? The flag beside the message box opens slan.co/feedback with Bug report ready. Attach a screenshot so we can reproduce the problem.

Personalise your experience
Open the avatar at the bottom-left of the sidebar → Profile → Personalisation. This is where you give the assistant context and background about you, so it stops asking what it could already know.
- What should the AI know about you? Your programme, your background, what you're working towards, the constraints you're under. 500 characters.
- How should the AI respond? “ask one question at a time”, “always give an example”, “push back on weak reasoning”.
- Tone and Response length, from Academic to Playful, Brief to Thorough.
- Memories. Toggle them on or off here, and press Manage to see, edit or delete what SLAN remembers.
Press Save. It applies to your next message.

Join a new cohort
New course, new elective, new term? You don't need a second account. Go to Profile → My access and add the cohort to the account you already have.
- Press + Join cohort.
- Enter the new registration code and press Join.
- The cohort card appears with its assistants and courses.
About leaving. Leave removes access to that cohort's assistants and courses, and old chats become read-only. You keep them but cannot continue them.

Working well with your AI Guide
SLAN pushes you to defend a decision. These habits make the difference between a useful session and a frustrating one.
Do
- Bring the real assignment, with its deadline and constraints.
- Say what you have already tried and where you got stuck.
- Ask it to stress-test the reasoning you already have.
- Disagree out loud. “That's not what the case says” is a useful message.
- Answer its questions in full. That is where the thinking happens.
Don't
- Ask it to write the submission for you. That is not what it is for, and your school's rules still apply.
- Take numbers, dates or citations on trust. Check them against the source.
- Paste the whole brief and expect one perfect answer back.
- Share confidential company data, or anyone's personal details.
- Stay quiet when an answer is wrong. Flag it (step 6).
Stuck somewhere?
