Update a Thinking Path
How to edit path metadata, steps, and graph connections, then redeploy changes.
Edit a field you got wrong, add something you skipped, or delete a Thinking Path entirely.
Examples in this guide use the Software Decision Walkthrough Thinking Path from Getting Started with Thinking Paths.
How to edit the path
- Navigate to your course → Thinking Paths tab
- Select the path → click the Edit button (pencil icon)
- The form opens with the same four tabs: Overview, Guardrails, Final Output, Tutoring Approach
- Make your changes
- Click Update Path
Changes go to draft. Learners will not see them until you redeploy the assistant.
Example: Add a second Rule to the Guardrails tab: Do not accept cost estimates that only include development — ask whether testing and first-year maintenance are included. Open the path, go to the Guardrails tab, click Add Rule, type the new rule, and click Update Path.
How to edit a step
- Open the path from the Thinking Paths tab
- In the sidebar, find the step → click the more menu (three dots) → Edit step
- Make your changes to any field: Name, Description, Instructions, Related Frameworks, or Checklist
- Click Update Step
Changes go to draft. Redeploy the assistant to push them live.
Example: Strengthen the checklist for Step 2 (Evaluate the options). Add a new item: The learner has compared the build cost against at least one buy option. Open the step, click Add Checklist Item, type the new condition, and click Update Step.
How to add or remove steps
To add a step: Click the + button in the sidebar → fill in the step fields → click Create Step. Then wire it into the graph by dragging connections from existing steps.
To remove a step: Hover over the step node in the graph and click the X button, or use the sidebar's more menu → Delete step. Any connections to and from that step are removed.
After adding or removing steps, check that:
- The Entry Step is still set correctly in the Overview tab
- All steps are still reachable from the Entry Step (use the Only reachable toggle in the toolbar to check)
- The graph flow still makes sense end to end
Redeploy after changes
Changes to the path or its steps are in draft until you deploy the assistant again.
- Navigate to your course → Assistants tab
- Open the assistant that uses this Thinking Path
- Click Deploy
Learners will see the updated version immediately after you deploy.
How to delete
Before deleting a path: Remove or reassign the assistant that uses it. An assistant attached to a deleted path will stop working.
- Navigate to your course → Assistants tab → delete the assistant
- Navigate to your course → Thinking Paths tab → delete the path
Steps that belong only to the deleted path can also be deleted. Steps shared across multiple paths will remain in the other paths.
